A clutch that’s gone — pedal to the floor with no resistance, a burning smell, or the car stuck and unable to select gears — is a journey-ender. Here’s what’s happening and what to do.
The signs
- The pedal drops to the floor and stays there, or feels spongy.
- A strong burning smell and the engine revving without the car pulling (a slipping clutch).
- You can’t get it into gear, or it jumps out.
Don’t try to drive on
Once a clutch has failed you can’t reliably change gear or pull away, and forcing it can damage the gearbox. This isn’t a limp-home job — it needs recovering to a garage.
Getting recovered
We’ll get you off the road and take the car to your garage or home, 24/7, anywhere in the UK. Cars, vans, anything — if it won’t drive, we’ll move it.
