Flatbed versus conventional tow — which you need
Sending the right truck matters. A flatbed (spec-lift) loads the whole vehicle onto the bed, keeping all four wheels off the road — essential for many vehicles. A conventional tow lifts one axle and rolls the vehicle on its other wheels, which is fine for some cars but not all.
- Electric vehicles (EVs) — need a flatbed; towing on the driven wheels can damage the motor.
- Automatics — usually need a flatbed to protect the gearbox.
- Four-wheel-drive vehicles — generally require a flatbed.
