Stay off the live carriageway where you can, hazards on, and call 07301 118118 — K9 Recovery covers all of Sussex, coast to Downs, sending the nearest available driver with a price agreed up front.
Sussex Breakdown Recovery, Coast to Downs
Sussex runs from the Gatwick approach roads in the north to more than seventy miles of coastline in the south, crossing the South Downs in between. That variety means a breakdown here could happen in queued airport traffic, on a steep chalk hill, or on the seafront in Brighton. K9 Recovery covers all of it, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
It makes no difference whether it is a car, van, 4×4, EV, motorcycle, prestige or classic model, caravan, motorhome, taxi or a non-runner — recovery is always by flatbed, never a tow. There is no membership to pay for and nobody to queue behind on the phone; the price is agreed first, every time.

North to South: The Roads That Shape Sussex
The M23 feeds into the A23 south of Gatwick, forming the main route down to Brighton and one of the busiest single corridors in the county. Running east to west, the A27 links Chichester, Worthing, Brighton and Eastbourne, and it is notorious for congestion where it narrows to single carriageway or meets local traffic in towns it passes straight through. The A21 serves Hastings from the north, while the A24 and A22 cross the Downs to Worthing and Eastbourne respectively. See our M23 breakdown recovery guide for the wider network.
The Coast Road and Newhaven
The A259 hugs the coastline for most of its length, and it is a slow, twisting road through seafront towns that floods in places during high tides and winter storms. Newhaven port adds ferry freight traffic into the mix on the south coast section, and queuing HGVs around the port approach are a common sight — our HGV recovery service covers exactly this kind of vehicle.
The South Downs
The chalk hills of the South Downs run the length of the county, and the roads that cross them are steep, exposed and prone to sudden fog rolling in off the sea. A vehicle that loses power on a Downs gradient can be genuinely hard to see for following traffic until a driver gets warning triangles out. Agricultural traffic is a normal part of driving on the A27 and the lanes around the Downs during harvest season, and slow-moving tractors and trailers are one of the more common causes of the tailbacks that lead to a breakdown call.
Gatwick and the Crawley Growth Area
Crawley has grown up almost entirely around Gatwick Airport, and the roads feeding it — the M23 spur and the surrounding business park network — carry heavy taxi, hire car and staff traffic around the clock. Long-stay parking breakdowns, particularly flat batteries after a fortnight away, are a regular part of our work in this corner of the county. Further along the coast, the twisting lanes behind Hastings and the High Weald villages inland from Eastbourne are far narrower and hillier than the seafront roads suggest, and a breakdown there can be genuinely tucked out of sight of passing traffic, which makes an accurate village or landmark name more useful to us than a postcode alone.
Sussex Towns, West to East
Sussex is a long, thin county, and the work changes character every few miles along the coast. K9 sends a vetted driver from our nationwide network who is already working nearby, rather than running a depot in any of these towns. Here is how the calls tend to look in each one, from the Hampshire border to Hastings.
Chichester
Chichester is a small city with large traffic habits. The A27 bypass hugs the old walls, and its junctions towards Fishbourne and Bognor Regis back up fast after even a minor stall, while the Northgate and Southgate roundabouts spread any blockage across the centre within minutes. On Goodwood weekends the A286 and A285 fill with slow queues, so a meeting point is agreed outside any closures. South towards Selsey the lanes suit a smaller truck, the A259 carries summer caravans, and delivery vans from the business park off the A27 make up much of the quieter work. St Richards Hospital sits just off the ring road.
Worthing
Worthing is a strip of town several miles long, with the A259 coast road as its spine, the A27 bypass carrying faster traffic to the north and the A24 dropping in from Findon through a run of bends that catch out drivers in wet weather. A fault at the Goring end is a different job from one near the pier, where Marine Parade clogs on warm weekends and a stalled car can hold up buses along the promenade. Around Worthing Hospital a driver approaches from the side that keeps visitor traffic moving, and the narrow residential streets by Goring need a careful approach. Motorcyclists and classic car owners favour the coast run.
Horsham
Horsham itself is easy enough, because the bypass keeps most traffic off the centre, but the real work lies in the lanes beyond it. The A24 towards Southwater has few pull-ins, the A264 to Crawley is busy with airport traffic at all hours, and the A281 winds through the Downs towards Guildford. Around Warnham, Slinfold, Nuthurst, Rusper and Colgate a car stopped on a hedged, unlit lane is hard to see, so drivers bring proper lighting. Flat batteries at Broadbridge Heath retail park are a regular small job, and travellers racing a flight get priority. Ring 07301 118118, name the nearest village or farm gate, and we start placing a driver at once.
Brighton
Brighton does not wind down at eleven, so clubs around West Street and the Lanes mean breakdowns arrive at 2am as readily as at 8am. The terraced streets climbing through Hanover and Elm Grove are steep enough that tired handbrakes and clutches give out on a hill start, and with parking on both sides a driver chocks the wheels before winching. Bus lanes and the one-way system limit the routes a truck can take, the A259 seafront overheats cars in stop-start summer traffic, and match days at the Amex Stadium near Falmer move collection points away from the exits. Approach roads to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Kemptown are cleared first.
Eastbourne
Eastbourne packs a lot of variety into a small area. The A22 comes down from the Weald to meet the A27 at Polegate, where faults need clearing from fast traffic quickly, while the exposed hills around Beachy Head can turn hazardous in strong wind, especially for high-sided vehicles. The A259 coast road towards Pevensey clogs in summer, and the seafront draws caravans and motorhomes that need space and care on narrow streets. Around Sovereign Harbour the marina, retail units and housing share awkward roads, so a driver checks the wider picture before loading. Jobs near the District General Hospital are moved along promptly.
Hastings
Hastings is hills and old streets. Around Ore and St Leonards a stalled vehicle is secured before anything else because it can roll, while the A21 north towards Flimwell is about clearing a fast road safely. In the Old Town, between the seafront and East Hill, the lanes are so narrow that a driver often walks the approach first, deciding whether the car can be moved to a wider road or the flatbed must reverse in from the nearest junction. The A259 towards Bexhill is exposed in wet and windy weather, and the A28 towards Rye has few safe places to wait. Ring 07301 118118 and say which hill you are on.
Beyond Sussex we also cover Kent to the east, Surrey to the north and Hampshire along the western border.

Sussex Vehicle Recovery Questions
Can you recover an HGV queuing for the Newhaven ferry?
Yes, we recover HGVs and large commercial vehicles from the Newhaven port approach and the wider Sussex road network.
What if my car loses power on a South Downs hill?
Get warning triangles out if you have them and it is safe to do so, since visibility on Downs roads can be poor, then call us with the nearest village or road name.
Do you cover the seafront in Brighton during busy summer weekends?
Yes, Brighton seafront and the surrounding one-way system are part of our normal coverage, including the busiest summer weekends when parking and traffic are at their worst.
