Which Sections of the M1 Have No Hard Shoulder
Several long stretches of the M1 run as smart motorway with the hard shoulder removed permanently: Junction 13 to 16, 16 to 19, 23a to 25, 28 to 31, 32 to 35a and 39 to 42. On these sections there is no verge to pull onto. Instead there are marked emergency refuge areas spaced out along the carriageway, shown by blue signs with an orange SOS phone symbol.
- If you can keep rolling, aim for the next refuge area rather than stopping in a live lane.
- If you cannot reach one, stay in the vehicle, keep your seatbelt on, put the hazards on, and dial 999 so National Highways can close the lane with a red X before anyone approaches on foot.
- Never get out to place a warning triangle on any part of the M1 — it is not worth the risk.
