- Move onto the hard shoulder or into an Emergency Refuge Area (the orange bays with SOS phones) and switch on your hazard lights.
- Exit the vehicle on the left-hand side and wait behind the barrier, uphill of your vehicle if possible.
- On smart motorway sections with no hard shoulder, stay in your vehicle with hazards on if you cannot reach a refuge area, keep your seatbelt fastened, and dial 999 if you are in a live lane.
