The M56 runs about 35 miles from the M60 at Junction 4 in Manchester out past Manchester Airport at Junctions 5 and 6, across Cheshire near Knutsford, down to Runcorn and the M6 at Junctions 9 and 10, and on to Chester at Junctions 14 and 15, where it hands over to the A55 into North Wales. The section around Junctions 6 to 8 is smart motorway with no permanent hard shoulder.

The Airport End: Junctions 5 and 6
Traffic for Manchester Airport merges here constantly, day and night, and a breakdown at this end tends to build a queue fast. If your car is showing signs of trouble on the approach, it is worth trying to reach one of the airport slip roads rather than the smart section just beyond it.
The Smart Section Around Junctions 6 to 8
Through here there is no guaranteed hard shoulder, only emergency refuge areas set back from the carriageway. Head for one if the car can still move. If it cannot and you are stuck in a live lane, stay belted in, put your hazards on and dial 999, since National Highways needs to close that lane with a red X before a truck can reach you safely.
Cheshire Plain: Knutsford to Runcorn
West of the airport the M56 crosses open Cheshire countryside, where weather can change quickly — fog off the plain, standing water after heavy rain, or crosswinds in exposed sections. A conventional hard shoulder is more likely here, so if you can, get fully onto it, leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier.
Runcorn to Chester and the Welsh Border
Around Junctions 9 and 10 the M56 meets the M6 near Runcorn, and further on it runs into Chester at Junctions 14 and 15 before becoming the A55 towards Wales. Drivers continuing into North Wales sometimes push on with a fault rather than stop in England, which is not worth the risk if the car is genuinely struggling.
Winter Driving on the M56
Cheshire’s flat, open landscape means the M56 can ice over quickly in cold snaps, particularly on the elevated sections near Runcorn, while the airport end tends to stay a degree or two warmer thanks to the surrounding development. If your car struggles to start or loses grip in winter conditions, treat it the same as any other breakdown: get off the carriageway, do not try to nurse a sliding vehicle further along the road, and call for a truck that can handle icy conditions safely. Even outside winter, sudden downpours can reduce grip quickly on this stretch, so easing off the accelerator early is often safer than braking hard once a fault appears.
