Putting the wrong fuel in your car is one of the most common mistakes on the forecourt, and it can happen to anyone in a hurry. If you have filled a diesel with petrol, or a petrol with diesel, the single most important thing is this: do not start the engine and do not even turn on the ignition. K9 Recovery and Transport provides fast, 24/7 wrong fuel recovery right across the UK, with a vetted local driver on the way to you wherever you are. Any time, any place, any vehicle, any situation.
Stop before you make it worse
The moment you realise you have misfuelled, the clock starts. If the car is still on the forecourt, don’t move it. If you have already driven off and the engine is running, pull over safely as soon as you can and switch off. The reason we stress this so strongly is simple: as soon as the ignition is turned on, the fuel pump begins circulating the wrong fuel through the system. Keeping the engine off keeps the damage contained to a straightforward drain and flush, rather than a repair bill running into thousands.
- Do not start the engine or turn the key to the ignition position.
- Do not push the car in a way that could prime the fuel system.
- Put the vehicle in neutral with the handbrake on and, if safe, move clear of moving traffic.
- Call us and tell us your location, the fuel you put in, and roughly how much.
Roadside fuel draining and flush
In most cases a misfuel is fixed at the roadside without needing to move the car at all. Our driver safely drains the contaminated fuel from the tank, flushes the lines, and refills with the correct fuel so you can be back on your way. If the engine was never started, this is usually all that is needed. It is far quicker and far cheaper than the alternative, which is exactly why acting fast matters so much.
When recovery is the safer option
If the engine has already been run and there is a risk of damage to the fuel pump, injectors or filters, the wisest course is to recover the vehicle to a garage rather than gamble on the road. We handle that too. Our breakdown recovery service can transport your car on a flatbed to a garage of your choice, protecting the engine from further harm. If it’s broken down or at risk, we can move it.
Nationwide cover, day and night
You should not be stranded on a busy forecourt or a motorway hard shoulder waiting hours for help. With 3,000 vetted drivers across an independent nationwide network, there is almost always a driver near you, whatever the time. Because those drivers compete for the job, you get the keenest price rather than a fixed call-out fee, and there is no membership to join. See where we cover on our vehicle recovery areas page. It is one of the reasons drivers rate us 4.9 out of 5 from more than 200 Google reviews.
Frequently asked questions
I have put petrol in my diesel but not started it. Am I okay?
Very likely, yes. If the ignition has not been switched on, the wrong fuel is sitting in the tank and has not circulated. A roadside drain and flush should have you sorted with no lasting harm. Call us before you touch anything.
What happens if I have already driven the car?
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Once the fuel has circulated there is a risk to the fuel system, so we usually recommend recovery to a garage rather than continuing to drive. We will advise you on the phone.
Is putting diesel in a petrol car as serious?
It is generally less damaging than petrol in a diesel, but it still needs draining and should not be ignored. The safe rule for either mistake is the same: do not start the engine and call us.
How quickly can you reach me?
We operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, nationwide. With thousands of drivers on the network, one is usually close by. Give us your exact location and we will get the nearest available driver to you as fast as possible.
