Beckton lorry recovery: Gallions Roundabout, the Royal Docks and the A13
Beckton is where the A13, the A406 North Circular and the A1020 Royal Docks Road all meet at Gallions Roundabout, which makes it the hinge for heavy traffic between the docks, the Thames Gateway and the rest of London. Around it sit the gasworks redevelopment land, the sewage treatment works, Beckton Retail Park, the Armada Way industrial units, and to the south the Royal Docks with their container handling, the ExCeL halls and London City Airport. Lorries here carry containers, exhibition freight, retail stock, construction materials and waste.
K9 Recovery’s east London heavy operators are as close to Beckton as anyone, and the Royal Docks work in particular is why we keep HIAB and heavy underlift capacity in this part of the city.

Gallions Roundabout and the A13 flyover
Gallions is a large signalised roundabout with the A13 passing over it and slip roads in every direction. A lorry that fails on the roundabout, on the A13 flyover above it or on the A406 approach from the north blocks one of three trunk roads at once, and the queues build towards Barking and Canning Town within minutes. We treat any Gallions breakdown as urgent. The operator confirms exactly which arm or slip the vehicle is on so the heavy unit arrives from the right direction, shields the scene, lifts and clears to the retail park service roads or Armada Way before the longer tow begins.
The Royal Docks: containers, skeletals and crane work
Container haulage in and out of the Royal Docks runs on skeletal trailers, and a failed tractor unit with a loaded box behind it is one of the more common calls we take from the A1020. We recover artics up to around 30 tonnes as a combination where the coupling allows, or split the unit from the trailer and return for the box. Where a container has been dropped short of a stack, or a piece of plant has failed on the dock estate roads, our HIAB crane trucks lift it onto a flatbed. Exhibition build-up weeks at ExCeL bring a surge of artics onto Western Gateway, and a failure in that queue is cleared fast because the marshals cannot work around it.
Beckton Retail Park, Armada Way and the A13 slips
The retail parks take supermarket rigids and artics all day, and their service roads are not built for a recovery. On Armada Way and the units off Alfreds Way the traffic is builders’ merchants, tippers and van fleets, on roads shared with the DLR viaduct footings and the bus garage. A lorry stopped at a retail park bay or on Armada Way is lifted and moved to a spot that lets the yard keep working, then towed on to your depot or repairer at the price already agreed.
Typical Beckton heavy jobs
- Tractor unit failure on a loaded container skeletal on the A1020.
- Refrigerated 18-tonner that will not build air at a retail park bay.
- Laden tipper with a snapped driveshaft on the A13 between Gallions and Barking.
- Exhibition artic stuck on the ExCeL approach during build-up.
- Site cabin or container lift from the gasworks redevelopment land.
Every one of those uses a different truck from our London fleet. Our HGV recovery in London page shows the range.

Beckton and Royal Docks recovery FAQ
My tractor unit has failed with a loaded container on the A1020 Royal Docks Road. Can you take the whole thing?
Yes, up to around 30 tonnes combined. We will ask the gross weight and whether the container is sealed. If the combination is over what we can suspend safely, we split it and bring a second unit for the trailer.
The lorry is on Gallions Roundabout itself, not the flyover. Which way will the recovery truck come from?
We will confirm the arm you are on and approach from behind you so the recovery vehicle can shield the casualty. Tell us the last road sign or exit you passed and we will work it out from there.
Can you lift a site cabin from the Beckton gasworks development land?
Yes, with the HIAB. We need the cabin weight and dimensions and whether the ground on the approach is firm enough for a crane truck to set up.
