Hammersmith Vehicle Recovery: Flyover, Gyratory and a Closed Bridge

Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to motor traffic since 2019, and that single fact shapes every recovery job in W6. Traffic that used to cross to Barnes now goes round by Putney Bridge or Chiswick Bridge, which loads Fulham Palace Road and the A4 with cars that would not otherwise be there. On top of that sits the gyratory, the flyover carrying the A4 over it, and King Street running west to Chiswick. Our drivers work this junction of junctions daily and know where a truck can stand without becoming part of the problem.

K9 Recovery operates every hour of every day of the year. London has more of our drivers and heavier trucks than any other region, and Hammersmith is close to the middle of that cover. Phone 07301 118118; a person answers, the price is agreed, and the truck leaves.

The flyover and the Great West Road

The A4 across the Hammersmith flyover is two lanes each way, no shoulder, and cameras end to end. If you have stopped on it, stay in the car with your belt on unless there is a safe refuge, and tell us your direction. We do not load on the flyover unless the police have closed a lane; we approach from the Talgarth Road side eastbound or from the Great West Road westbound and, where the car still rolls, walk it down the off-slip to the gyratory first.

How the job runs, in order

1. The call

You tell us the road, the nearest landmark, such as the Apollo, Charing Cross Hospital or the Broadway bus station, and what the vehicle is. No membership, no queue.

2. The price

Given and agreed before dispatch, covering the recovery and any onward journey. If you want the car taken to a garage in Acton or a dealer in the north of England, it is the same quote.

3. The approach

On the gyratory the driver enters from Shepherd’s Bush Road, Hammersmith Bridge Road or Butterwick depending on which arm you are on. On King Street, which is a bus corridor with loading bays, we use the bays or a side turning. On Fulham Palace Road by the hospital we keep clear of the ambulance approach.

4. The lift

Electric cars are loaded on a flatbed only; cars, vans, 4x4s, motorcycles, taxis, prestige and classic vehicles, caravans, motorhomes and non-runners are all standard. If the vehicle has been in a collision on the A4 or the gyratory, our accident recovery team in London handles the scene as well as the transport.

Shepherd’s Bush and Westfield

Shepherd’s Bush Green is a roundabout in all but name and Westfield London has multi-storey car parks with height barriers. We ask which car park and which level before sending a truck; for the covered decks we send a vehicle that clears the barrier, or meet the car at the exit on Ariel Way if it rolls. Uxbridge Road and Goldhawk Road are bus corridors and we load in the side streets off them.

Bigger than a van

Coaches heading for the Apollo and lorries on the A4 sometimes need more than a standard truck. The London heavy team takes vehicles up to around 30 tonnes. Across the country, 3,000 vetted drivers extend the same service to any UK address, and every job is fully insured.

What the reviews record

4.9 out of 5 from more than 200 Google reviews, and a recurring line in them is that the price at the end matched the price at the start. Hammersmith is one part of the vehicle recovery across London that gives west London its short waits.

Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush questions

I have broken down on the Hammersmith flyover itself. Do you come up onto it?

Only if a lane is already closed by the police; otherwise it is not safe for you or the driver. Stay belted in with the hazards on, ring us, and if the car will still roll we talk you down the off-slip to the gyratory where the truck can load properly. If it will not roll, we coordinate with the police for a lane closure and then lift.

Can you get me across the river with Hammersmith Bridge closed?

Yes; we just do not use that bridge. Depending on where the car is going, the driver crosses at Putney Bridge or Chiswick Bridge. The extra mileage is built into the price we agree at the start, not added afterwards.

Is a recovery from the Westfield London car park possible for a full-size truck?

The surface and roof-level areas yes; the covered decks generally not, because of the height barriers. We confirm the level with you and send a vehicle that fits or meet the car at the exit.
