Breaking down on a motorway is one of the most dangerous situations a driver can face. Fast-moving traffic, no easy place to stop and the noise and wind of passing lorries make it frightening – but if you know what to do, you can keep yourself safe and get help quickly. Here’s exactly what to do, step by step.
1. Get off the carriageway if you can
The moment you sense a problem – a warning light, a strange noise, a loss of power – start planning to leave the road. If you can reach the next exit or services safely, do it. If not, move onto the hard shoulder, or on a smart motorway into an Emergency Refuge Area (the orange bays with an SOS phone). Pull as far to the left as possible and turn your wheels to the left.
2. Switch on your hazard lights
Put your hazard warning lights on straight away, day or night, so other drivers can see you’re in trouble. In poor visibility or at night, keep your sidelights on too.
3. Get everyone out – on the left
Leave the vehicle by the left-hand doors, away from traffic. Get everyone, including children and pets, out and behind the safety barrier, up the embankment if there is one. Never stand in front of or behind your vehicle, and never attempt repairs on the hard shoulder yourself.
4. What about smart motorways with no hard shoulder?
This is where it gets harder. If you can’t reach an Emergency Refuge Area or an exit and you’re stuck in a live lane:
- Keep your seatbelt on and your hazard lights flashing.
- Stay in the vehicle if it’s not safe to get out.
- Call 999 immediately – the police can close the lane and set the overhead signs to protect you.
If you can get out safely and reach the verge behind the barrier, do so.
5. Call for recovery
Once you’re safe, call for help. If you’re a member of a breakdown service, call them. 6. Wait in a safe place
Stay behind the barrier until help arrives. Don’t be tempted to sit back in the car on the hard shoulder – it’s one of the most dangerous places to be. If you feel at risk from another person while waiting, get back into the vehicle from the left-hand side and lock the doors until you feel safe again.
