Heavy recovery on the A13 and River Road, Barking
Barking sits on one of the busiest freight corridors in east London. The A13 carries port traffic from Tilbury and the Thames Gateway straight past the borough, the A406 North Circular peels off at the Barking flyover, and beneath them the River Road industrial belt runs down to Creekmouth and the Thames. Scrap yards, aggregate wharves, waste transfer stations and pallet depots keep tippers, skip lorries and curtainsiders moving from before dawn until well after the evening peak.
When one of those lorries stops where it should not, K9 Recovery gets a heavy unit to it quickly. London is where we keep our most drivers and our heaviest kit, and Barking is squarely inside the patch our east London operators cover every day.

Where Barking lorries tend to grind to a halt
- A13 between the A406 interchange and Lodge Avenue — a breakdown in lane one here backs traffic to Canning Town within minutes, and there is no hard shoulder to nurse a trailer onto.
- River Road and Thames Road — heavy tippers on the wharves, tight yard entrances, and a lot of reversing across the carriageway.
- Thames View and Barking Riverside — live construction sites with muck-away tippers and low-loaders on unmade access roads that swallow a laden axle.
- Renwick Road and the A13 junction — a common spot for turbo and clutch failures as loaded artics pull away uphill.
Clearing a lane-blocking artic on the A13
A stalled articulated lorry on the A13 is treated as a live-lane emergency. Our recovery operator arrives with a heavy underlift capable of taking rigids of 7.5, 18 and 26 tonnes and articulated combinations up to around 30 tonnes. The tractor unit is lifted from the front or the trailer is suspended from the rear depending on the failure, the combination is moved off the live carriageway to a safe layby or the nearest yard, and the road reopens. If the unit needs to go further, we tow it to your depot or a repairer of your choice at the price agreed before we set off.
Loaded trailers stay loaded
We do not ask you to tranship freight at the roadside. Curtainsiders, box trailers and refrigerated units are recovered with the load on board, and where a fridge trailer needs its unit kept running for the journey we plan for that at the time of booking.
Tippers, skips and tankers
A lot of Barking’s heavy traffic is bulk: aggregate tippers heading for the wharves, roll-on roll-off skip lorries on the waste transfer runs, and the occasional tanker. Each is recovered on the right equipment for its axle layout and centre of gravity, not whatever truck happened to be nearest.
HIAB lifts at Barking Riverside and Creekmouth
With thousands of homes still going up at Barking Riverside, plant moves are constant. Our HIAB crane recovery handles mini diggers, rollers, generators, site cabins and containers that have been dropped in the wrong place or need shifting off a site road that a low-loader cannot reach.

Barking heavy recovery: questions we get asked
My artic has broken down on the A13 flyover at the A406 junction. Can you reach me?
Yes. The A13/A406 interchange is one of the most exposed spots in east London for a stationary lorry. Get well behind the barrier, keep your hazard lights on, and phone us. We will confirm the direction of travel and the exact position so the heavy unit approaches from the correct carriageway rather than having to loop back round.
Can you recover a laden tipper from a wharf on River Road?
We can. River Road yards are tight and often have loose material underfoot, so we will ask about the entrance width and whether the vehicle is on hard standing before dispatching. A laden tipper is recovered as it stands unless the load has shifted to the point of being unsafe.
Do you cover the construction access roads at Barking Riverside?
Yes, including unmade site roads. For a bogged low-loader or a plant carrier that cannot get traction we send a unit with the pulling capacity to winch it back onto firm ground before recovering it, and a HIAB if the plant itself needs lifting.
