Kingston upon Thames: recovering vehicles on the bypass, the bridge and the one-way system
Three things make Kingston recovery different from the rest of south-west London. The A3 Kingston Bypass is a near-motorway with the Tolworth, Hook and Robin Hood junctions and no real hard shoulder. The A308 Kingston Bridge is one of only a handful of Thames crossings this far up river, and when a car stops on it the tailbacks reach Hampton Court one way and Norbiton the other. And the town centre one-way system, looping around Clarence Street, Wood Street, Eden Street and the Cromwell Road bus station, is where visitors get lost and clutches get cooked. We recover from all three, and from Surbiton, New Malden, Norbiton and the Richmond Park gates, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The three Kingston jobs
The A3 Kingston Bypass
Between the Robin Hood roundabout and the Hook underpass the A3 runs at speed with slip roads at New Malden, Tolworth and the A240. There is no continuous hard shoulder, so if the car will still move we will ask you to get to the next slip, the Tolworth roundabout or the lay-by past Hook. If it has stopped dead in a lane, stay in the car with hazards on, ring 999 if you are in a live lane, and ring us; the A3 inside the M25 is not a National Highways motorway, so our trucks attend directly once it is safe.
Kingston Bridge and the A308
The bridge carries the A308 from Kingston to Hampton Wick, and a car that stops on it needs lifting fast because there is nowhere for traffic to go. Our drivers come at the bridge from the side that puts the flatbed behind you, and we clear the carriageway before doing anything else. The Hampton Court Road end and the Horse Fair junction on the Kingston side both have space to finish loading properly once the car is off the bridge.
The town centre one-way system
Kingston’s loop is camera enforced, bus-heavy, and feeds the Bentall Centre, Eden Walk and Rotunda car parks, all of which have height barriers our trucks cannot pass. If you break down inside the loop we will agree a meeting point on the phone, usually a bay on Wheatfield Way or the Cattle Market car park approach, and the driver goes round once and loads. If the car is in a car park we send the driver in on foot for a jump start first, and if that fails you bring the car to the exit ramp.
Surbiton, New Malden, Norbiton and Richmond Park
Surbiton has the station, the Victoria Road shops and the Ewell Road red route where we do not linger. New Malden is the A3 slips and the High Street, with the Fountain roundabout where cars stop in the queue. Norbiton has Kingston Hospital on Galsworthy Road, a regular for cars that will not start after a long visit. Richmond Park is unusual: the roads close at dusk and carry a 20 mph limit, so a car that has failed near Kingston Gate needs collecting before the gates shut or arranging with the park team afterwards.
Vans in and out of Kingston
Loaded vans that stop on the bypass or in the Chessington industrial estates need to be secure the same day, and our Kingston van recovery page covers commercial vehicles, high roofs and onward transport to a depot anywhere in the country.

Kingston questions
My car has stopped on Kingston Bridge itself, what happens first?
The priority is clearing the bridge. Put the hazards on, get out on the footway side if it is safe, and ring us straight away with which direction you were travelling. Our driver will come from behind you, get the car onto the bed or winched clear to the nearest end, and finish securing it once traffic is moving again.
I have broken down on the A3 near Tolworth, does National Highways need to come out?
No, the A3 through Kingston is a Transport for London road, not a motorway, so our trucks attend directly. If you are stopped in a live lane call 999 so the police can protect you, and we will be on our way at the same time.
The car will not start in Richmond Park and the gates close soon, can you get in?
If you ring before the gates shut we will do everything we can to reach you before closing, and the park roads are open to our trucks during hours. If it is after closing, we will speak to the park team about access, which sometimes means a next-morning collection; we will tell you straight which it is.
