Ealing vehicle recovery: the A40, the gyratory and everything south of it

If you drive in Ealing you know the A40 Western Avenue. It carries traffic between the M40 and central London through the borough at speed, with the Hanger Lane gyratory at the A406 junction, the Greenford and Perivale flyovers, and the Gipsy Corner and Savoy Circus junctions further east. A breakdown on the A40 is the most urgent kind of call we get in west London because there is no hard shoulder on most of it and the inside lane is live. South of the A40 the picture changes: Uxbridge Road through Ealing Broadway, Hanwell and Southall is slow, bus-heavy and lined with shops, and the residential grids of Northfields and West Ealing are where cars refuse to start in the morning.

What we can and cannot do on the A40

  • We can attend a vehicle on the A40 main carriageway, the slips and the gyratory, and our west London drivers do so routinely.
  • We cannot park a flatbed in a live lane for long, so we will ask you to get onto the verge, the nearest slip or a side road if the car will still roll.
  • We will tell you on the phone whether the police need to attend first, which is usually only when the car is in lane two or three and cannot be moved.
  • We use the A40 lay-bys west of Greenford and the Hanger Lane slip roads as the standard meeting points for cars that have managed to coast.
  • We load electric vehicles onto a flatbed with the driven wheels off the ground, never on a tow rope, and that applies on the A40 as anywhere else.

Ealing Broadway, Hanwell, Northfields and Southall

Ealing Broadway has a one-way loop around the station, the Broadway itself and Haven Green, plus the Ealing Broadway shopping centre car park with a height limit our trucks cannot clear. We meet you at the exit or on Haven Green where there is room to load. Hanwell has the Wharncliffe Viaduct end of Uxbridge Road where a stopped car narrows the road badly, and the Boston Manor Road junction where the A4127 crosses. Northfields is quieter, mostly driveway and side-street collections around the tube station. Southall is the busiest of the four, with The Broadway and South Road packed with delivery vans and taxis, and the level crossing near Southall station where nobody wants to be stationary. Ealing Hospital on Uxbridge Road is a regular for cars that have sat through a long shift and lost the battery.

Accidents on the A40 and the Uxbridge Road

The A40 and the Hanger Lane gyratory produce more collision recoveries than most roads in the capital. A car that has been in a shunt often cannot be driven even if it looks fine, and the police will want it cleared quickly. We recover accident-damaged vehicles onto a flatbed and deliver to a bodyshop, a storage yard or your home. If you need the detail, our London accident recovery page explains how it works and what to have ready when you ring.

What we recover across the borough

Cars, vans and 4x4s, electric vehicles on a flatbed, motorcycles and scooters, prestige and classic cars, taxis, caravans and motorhomes, and non-runners that have not moved in months. Heavier vehicles on the Greenford industrial estates are covered up to around 30 tonnes by our London heavy team, and the destination can be a garage in Hanwell or an address in Scotland.

Ealing questions, answered

I have broken down in lane two of the A40 at Perivale, what do I do?

Stay in the car with your seatbelt on and hazards flashing unless you can get to the verge safely, and call the police on 999 first because a live-lane stop on the A40 needs traffic managed. Then call us; we will be on our way while the police set up and can lift the car as soon as the lane is protected.

Can you get a truck round the Hanger Lane gyratory to the A406 exit?

Yes, the gyratory is a full circuit so we come round to whichever exit you are on. Tell us whether you are heading for the North Circular north or south, or the A40 east or west, and we will pick the right approach so the flatbed is facing the right way for loading.

My car will not start in the Ealing Broadway shopping centre car park, can you come in?

Not with the truck, because of the height barrier. We will send the driver in on foot to try a jump start first, and if the car needs recovering we will ask you to get it to the exit ramp where it can be loaded.
