A horsebox breakdown is more stressful than most — there’s a large, valuable vehicle to move and, often, a horse on board. Here’s how to handle it calmly and safely.
1. Pull over safely and put hazards on
Get as far from moving traffic as you can. On a motorway, use the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area and keep well away from the carriageway.
2. If a horse is on board, this comes first
Tell your recovery operator immediately that there’s a horse in the box. Keep the horse as calm as possible and don’t unload onto a live carriageway or hard shoulder unless it’s genuinely safer and safe to do so. Welfare guides every decision.
3. You’ll likely need heavy recovery
