Whether it’s a manual that won’t shift or an automatic stuck in one gear, a gearbox that won’t cooperate is a journey-ender. Here’s what’s going on.
On a manual
If you can’t select gears, or the stick moves but nothing engages, it’s often a clutch, linkage or cable problem — see our clutch guide. Forcing it can make things worse.
On an automatic
Automatics sometimes drop into “limp mode” — locked in a single gear to protect the gearbox — usually alongside a warning light. Occasionally the selector or a sensor fails. Either way, it’s telling you to stop.
Don’t force it
Grinding a stubborn gearbox or driving in limp mode for miles can turn a sensor fault into a gearbox rebuild. Get it recovered to a garage and diagnosed properly.
