Cars talk to us in noises — and a new one is usually a warning worth listening to. Here’s a rough guide to what different sounds can mean, and when to stop before a small problem becomes a big bill.
Common noises and likely causes
- Grinding when braking — worn brake pads, metal on metal. Get it checked fast; this is a safety issue.
- Knocking or tapping from the engine — can point to low oil or internal wear. Don’t push it.
- Squealing or whining — often a slipping or failing belt, or power-steering fluid.
- Clunking over bumps — suspension or a worn joint.
- Hissing — could be a coolant leak; watch your temperature gauge and see our overheating guide.
When to stop and call
If the noise comes with a warning light, a loss of power or braking, or a burning smell, don’t drive on. Get it recovered to a garage rather than risk a breakdown somewhere worse — or worse, an accident.
