Broken Down at Night? How to Stay Safe and Get Help

A breakdown after dark feels worse — you’re harder to see, it’s colder, and it can feel isolating. Here’s how to stay safe and get help.

Make yourself seen

Get well off the road, hazard lights on, and leave your sidelights on so other drivers spot you. If you have a hi-vis vest, put it on before you get out — and get out on the side away from traffic.

Stay safe, not with the car

On a motorway or fast road, don’t sit in the car and don’t stand near the traffic side. Get behind the barrier and wait there. If you feel unsafe or vulnerable, lock the doors and stay in the car only if getting out would put you in more danger — and tell us when you call.

We”re here around the clock
