A problem while towing a caravan — a blowout, a snaking van, or the tow car simply giving up — is stressful and potentially dangerous. Here’s what to do to stay safe and get both your car and caravan recovered.
1. Slow down and pull over safely
If the caravan starts to snake, ease off the accelerator gently — don’t brake hard or steer sharply. Pull over as far left as you safely can, hazards on.
2. Get everyone to safety
On a motorway or fast road, get everyone out on the nearside, away from traffic and behind a barrier if there is one. Then explain the situation clearly to your recovery operator.
3. Don’t try to fix a blowout on a fast road
Changing a caravan tyre on a live carriageway is dangerous. It’s safer to have the whole outfit recovered to somewhere secure.
