Dashboard warning lights range from “book it in soon” to “stop the car immediately.” Knowing the difference can save your engine — and your safety.
Red means stop
As a rule, red lights mean act now. The big ones to take seriously:
- Oil pressure (oil-can symbol) — stop as soon as safe; running on low oil pressure wrecks engines fast.
- Temperature (thermometer) — you’re overheating; pull over and switch off.
- Battery / charging — the car may be running on battery alone and could cut out.
- Brake warning — never ignore anything braking-related.
Amber means investigate
Amber lights (like the engine-management light) often mean “get it checked soon” rather than “stop dead” — but if it’s flashing, or the car is running badly, treat it as serious.
When to call for recovery
If a red light is on and you’re not certain it’s safe to continue — or the car is driving strangely — don’t gamble. Get it recovered to a garage. It’s far cheaper than the damage a mile too far can cause.
