Declared your car off the road, or bought one that’s SORN? You can’t simply drive it away — doing so is an offence. Here’s how to move a SORN vehicle the right way.
What SORN actually means
SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It tells the DVLA a vehicle is off the public road, so you don’t pay tax or need insurance to keep it. The trade-off: it cannot be used or parked on a public road at all — only on private land like a drive, garage or yard.
The one exception
There’s a single exception to driving a SORN car: taking it to a pre-booked MOT test. Beyond that, putting it on a public road risks a fine and worse. For everything else, it has to be transported.
So how do you move it?
On a flatbed. Because the car is carried — not driven on the road — transport is completely legal for a SORN vehicle, taxed or not, running or not. It’s the standard way people move off-road cars.
