Electric and hybrid cars are brilliant to drive but need extra care to move. Get it wrong and you can cause expensive damage — so here’s what’s different about transporting an EV.
Why you can’t just tow an EV
On most electric cars the drive wheels are permanently connected to the electric motor. Tow it with those wheels turning on the road and you can damage the motor and regenerative braking system. Many EVs also can’t be shifted into a true “neutral” without power — and if the battery’s flat, you may not be able to release the parking brake or move the selector at all.
Flatbed is the answer
The safe way to move an EV is on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. No wheels turning, no drivetrain stress, no risk. It’s how we move every electric and hybrid car, running or not.
Flat battery or non-runner EV
A dead 12V battery can leave an EV “locked” — doors, brake and selector all unresponsive. It’s a common situation and nothing to worry about; the right winching kit gets it onto the bed safely. (See also: can you tow an automatic or electric car?)
