The moments after a collision are stressful and disorienting. Once everyone’s safe, there’s the question of the car itself — where it goes, who moves it, and what your options are. Here’s a calm run-through.
First, get safe
People before property. Get yourself and passengers to a safe place, hazards on, and dial 999 if anyone’s hurt or the vehicle is blocking a live lane. Only deal with the car once you’re out of harm’s way.
Getting the vehicle recovered
A damaged car often can’t be driven — and even if it can, it may not be safe or road-legal. Accident recovery gets it off the roadside and onto a flatbed quickly, clearing the scene and protecting the vehicle from further damage.
Where does the car go?
That’s your choice more often than people realise. It can go to your home, your own garage, or a bodyshop you trust — you don’t have to accept the first yard it’s dropped at. If your insurer arranges recovery, they may take it to a holding compound; you can still request onward transport to where you actually want it.
If it’s a write-off
