The first 60 seconds: get safe
Your priority is not the car, it’s you. As soon as you realise you’re in trouble:
- Get off the carriageway if you can. Coast onto the hard shoulder, a lay-by or as far left as possible. On a smart motorway with no hard shoulder, aim for an emergency refuge area.
- Hazards on immediately. In poor winter visibility, other drivers need every second of warning.
- Get out on the safe side (away from traffic) and stand well back, behind the barrier where there is one. Never stand between your car and oncoming traffic.
- Keep your coat and sensible footwear in the car. Standing on a freezing verge in a jumper is miserable and risky.
