Add short winter journeys (which never fully recharge the battery), plus heaters, lights, wipers and heated seats all pulling at once, and a battery that was merely tired in autumn simply gives up in December.
Batteries over five years old are the usual culprits. If yours has been slow to start for a few weeks, the cold weather hasn’t broken it, it’s just exposed a battery that was already on its way out.
What to do when your car won’t start
- Turn everything off first. Switch off the heater, radio, lights and heated screen, then try again. This gives every last amp to the starter motor.
- Dip the clutch. On a manual, pressing the clutch fully takes load off the engine and can be enough to get it turning.
- Listen to the crank. A rapid clicking or a slow, dying churn points to the battery. Total silence with dashboard lights working can point elsewhere.
- Don’t keep cranking. Repeated ten-second attempts flatten the battery further and can flood a petrol engine. Wait a minute between tries.

Should you jump start it yourself?
If you have leads and a willing donor car, a careful jump start is fine on most conventional vehicles. How long should I run my car to recharge a flat battery?
After a jump start, drive for at least 30 minutes at higher revs (a longer A-road or motorway run is ideal) to put charge back in. Short stop-start trips won’t do it. If the battery is more than a few years old and keeps going flat, have it tested and replaced.
Can the cold permanently ruin my battery?
