Electric cars are brilliant — until the range runs out or something won’t play ball. If your EV has stopped, here’s what to do, and one important thing not to do.
If you’ve run out of charge
Unlike a petrol car, you can’t just bring a can of fuel. If there’s no charger within reach, the safest fix is recovery to the nearest charge point or your destination. Pull over safely, hazards on, and call for help.
Important: don’t let anyone flat-tow your EV
Most electric cars must not be towed on their driven wheels — doing so can damage the electric motor and regenerative braking system. An EV should be recovered on a flatbed. Make sure whoever collects you is equipped for it — our electric vehicle recovery is flatbed as standard.
If it won’t start or won’t charge
EVs still have a small 12V battery that powers the electronics — if that fails, the car can seem “dead” even with charge in the main pack. Charging faults, warning lights and error messages are worth a professional look. When in doubt, get recovered somewhere safe.
