What drains a car battery?

Cold weather – batteries lose capacity in the cold, which is why winter mornings catch so many people out.
Short journeys – lots of short trips never fully recharge the battery.
Leaving lights or accessories on – headlights, interior lights or a charger left plugged in overnight.
An old battery – most last three to five years, then start to struggle.
A fault – a failing alternator or a hidden drain can flatten even a good battery.

Can you jump start it yourself?

A jump start worked – now what?

If a jump gets you going, drive for a good 20-30 minutes to put charge back in, or use a proper battery charger at home. But if the car goes flat again quickly, the battery won’t hold charge and needs replacing – a jump is only a temporary fix in that case.
