- Exit on the left-hand side and wait behind the barrier — on the Pennine summit stretch, wrap up: it’s cold up there even in summer.
- Smart motorway sections around Manchester and Leeds have no hard shoulder — if you can’t reach a refuge area, stay belted in with hazards on and dial 999 if you’re in a live lane.
